Jeff Gordon's win at the Pocono 500 on Sunday June 10, 2007 had several stories within the race that made the rain-shortened race very interesting to say the least. But one story that will not be talked about too much was the story inside the TNT broadcast of the NASCAR Nextel Cup race.

Pocono was the first of six Nextel Cup races TNT will broadcast following FOX airing the first 13 races of the year. Larry McReynolds has joined the TNT for their broadcast after working for FOX since 2001. Mid-race pit strategy would create some interesting battles of the mind, both on the track and in the broadcast booth.

With a caution on lap 65, Jeff Gordon and a hand full of drivers stayed out rather than pitting. They had just pitted eight laps earlier and rain clouds were making their way towards Pocono Raceway. It was clearly looking like a race to lap 101 instead of 200.

The pit window was about 26-28 laps for gas, so everybody would have to pit once more to reach the half-way mark for the race. With the difficulty of passing, track position was very important.

We know how the race unfolds, but it's the call from the broadcast booth that strikes me as funny. As Gordon nears time to pit for gas and tires at lap 82, TNT broadcaster Bill Weber said that, "they may be rethinking staying out under that last caution." No TNT broadcaster seemed to be able to see what was actually playing out in front of them, except McReynolds.

McReynolds presented Gordon's strategy as having everybody cycling through the pit stops and the rain comes after lap 101 to get the win. The guys in the booth all but laughed at him. In fact, Kyle Petty said if that would happen, he would retire because he could not compete with that.

That just makes me wonder what those guys were even thinking about in the booth.

We knew that everybody had to cycle through the pits to make it to the half-way mark of the race. If the rain came before lap 101 it would not be an official race anyways. So the big question was will the rain come before Gordon needed gas on about lap 114, or would Ryan Newman run him down before then.

If they would have restarted after the lap 106 red flag, almost all the drivers would have pitted for gas and tires. Gordon may not have won if that had happen, but with the current Chase for the Cup format, it was a risk worth taking.

McReynolds seemed to be the only broadcaster to understand the strategy as it was playing out. The FOX Network had to be happy that their man was on his game before the rain came down.

After the second world war stock car racing was very popular and drew big crowds. As its popularity grew so did the number of make-shift tracks increased. Due to the lack of a governing body often the rules varied from track to track and safety standards were inadequate.

In 1947 Bill France organized a meeting at the Streamline Hotel to discuss introducing a governing body for the stock car races. Bill was born in Washington D.C to his mother Emma Graham, an Irish immigrant, and father William Henry France. Bill France usually organized races on the beach-road courses and also raced in them himself. At the end of the meeting the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was created.

However the Cup Series, originally called the premier division, did not start until 1949 and its first race was held on 19th June 1949 at the Charlotte (N.C.) Fairgrounds. It was a big success and attracted a large crowd.

In 1950 the plans were made to allow the race to grow bringing bigger crowds and faster cars which led to the creation of the Darlington Raceway in South Carolina.

The first 10 years of NASCAR was an overwhelming success with the drivers soon becoming super-stars and heroes to the masses of fans that attended the races. The NASCAR race had outgrown the track at Daytona beach and moved to Daytona International Speedway with a 2.5 mile track banked at 30 degrees. The first competition that took place at the new track ended in a photo-finish that took the judges 3 days of deliberation to decide on the winner, Petty.

Even with the new Daytona racetrack the thirst for bigger and faster cars was still there and in 1960 Frank opened the 2.66-mile Alabama International Motor Speedway which is also known as Talladega Superspeedway. The need for more tracks led to new tracks being created throughout the country in places such as Brooklyn, Dover and Pocono.

With speeds in excess of 165 miles per hour, a couple dozen cars, and one goal in common, you can be sure there is going to be some serious carnage at a NASCAR race. The drivers have mere 100ths of a second to think and react, making NASCAR racing an incredibly dangerous sport. But, isn't that one of the reasons so many people tune in their televisions and buy tickets to these events?

The slightest mistake from one of the drivers, can cause a pileup of twisted and crushed metal, within seconds. It could be a rub from another driver that sends one car into a violent spin, hitting everything in its way. Usually, with such force, spectators cannot help themselves from rising out of their seats in total awe.

NASCAR racing has been a favorite pastime for many years. Among the favorite parts of this sport is the excitement of the crashes. Although, being a spectator can be a great deal of fun, there can sometimes be serious injury. Typically, only the drivers receive injuries during a race. Sometimes, fatality can be the end result of a racecar drivers career. Some of the changes are the HANS, or head and neck support and a kill switch to the engine.

Among some of the fatally injured is Kenneth Irwin, Jr. Adam Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr., J.D McDuffie and Grant Adcox. Some of the fatalities on the racetrack, have caused changes in the events. Modifying the way racing was done and changing the level of safety, in an attempt to save future drivers from serious or even fatal injuries during a race.

New Hampshire International Speedway has had some fatalities, the very first was Kenneth Irwin, Jr. As Mr. Irwin, Jr. was practicing for a race, the New England 300, there was a wreck. The speed of the car prior to the crash, caused the car to flip as it impacted against a wall.

Another professional racecar driver by the name of Mr. Adam Petty also had his life taken from him on the New Hampshire International Speedway. He was also preparing himself for an upcoming event. The car he was driving at the time of his passing was the one he was intending on using for the Busch Series. Mr. Petty's accelerator somehow became stuck. Soon after, he violently hit the wall. Immediately, upon impact with the wall, Mr. Petty passed away.
